Introduction to Playing the Drums
The drummer is the heartbeat of the band.
A good drummer is able to make an average band sound great and similarly an average drummer may well make a pretty good band sound distinctly average. Your two primary roles as the drummer are to keep steady and consistent time for the rest of the band and to support the song or tune that you are playing. You should be aiming to provide a solid rhythmic foundation for your fellow band members to play to and maintain a constant speed throughout unless the music requires tempo fluctuations.
Most music consists of various combinations of verse, chorus, bridge and solo and you as the drummer may lead the band from one section to another primarily by using fills. Alternatively you can differentiate between the sections by changing the dynamics of your playing such as altering your playing volume or maybe changing playing surfaces by switching from hi-hat to ride cymbal or maybe using different bass drum patterns for the various sections.
Your main job however remains that of timekeeper and that is the thought you should have in your mind whenever you pick up the sticks. Flashy fills and solos with stick twirling may impress a few people but it is keeping solid time and playing for the song that will keep your fellow band members happy and ensure that you “get you the gig” every time.
If you are new to drumming then start by learning how to hold the drumsticks and obtain a good posture and then move on to the Quarter Note Rhythms
