Lets add another ‘ in between’ snare drum by counting 1+ 2+ a 3 e + 4 +
Practice 2 + a 3 e + by playing hi-hat on 2 + 3 + and snare drum on the 2 a e
Again make sure your eighth notes are ‘in time’.
Now put the whole thing together with the bass drums on beat 1 & beat 3 & the + of beat 3.
Spice up this groove up by adding another snare drum on the a of 4 { same technique and feel as 2 + A 3 }
This creates a sort of continuous loop effect.
Practice slowly and counting aloud making sure all the a’s and e’s sit exactly between the eighth notes and that you are keeping steady time on the hi-hat.
I am a left hand drummer and my brother is right. what can i do?
Great question! I guess you are asking if you can avoid the constant set up alterations as the two of you share the kit.
Option 1. One of you choose to play open handed. ie lefthander plays right handed kit using left hand to play hi-hat,right hand on snare drum and right foot to play bass drum. This can work fine and several students of mine play like this. The only slightly awkward thing is that you will probably want to lead all your fills with your left hand which can make for some difficult movements round the kit. ( Incidentally Ringo Starr plays a right handed kit with his right hand on the hi-hat but leads all his fills with his left hand which accounts for the revolutionary fills on many of the Beatles songs.) Many top drummers play open handed and vary their leading hand according to what they are playing. Check out Simon Phillips, Billy Cobham and Carter Beauford among others.
Option 2 If you want to spend some money try investing in a double bass drum pedal and a remote wire hi-hat pedal and try various set up options to find one to suit you both ie One of you playing the drumkit in conventional fashion whilst the other plays open handed but with conventional pedal positions and tries leading fills with the oposite hand to ease the route around the kit.
Option 3 Better still teach yourselves to play both ways and take it in turns to switch the kit around. One month right handed and one month left. That will really do wonders for your limb coordination and independence.
